COLLECTIONS RELATING TO SION COLLEGE

Collections relating to Sion College'. The collection was formed by John Brand (1744-1806), antiquary and Rector of St Mary-at-Hill and St Mary Hubbard, City of London. Included are papers of Brand himself as President of Sion College 1802-4. ff. 1r-6v. Flyleaves. An index of contents (?late 19th cent) is tipped in as ff. 1r-4r. ff. 7r-64v. Originally a separate volume or fascicule, on paper of smaller size than the rest. Added notes appear throughout. Some of these appear to be in the hand of Michael Lort (1724-1790), antiquary and Rector of St. Matthew Friday Street, City of London, whose signature appears at f. 35r. Others may be in the hand of John Brand. ff. 7r-27r. 'The history and Hall of Sion College London, with several matters relating thereto. Written by John Williams DD, Rector of St. Mildred Poultry, London, and President of the said College (afterwards Bishop of Chichester) Anno Domini 1693'. ff. 27v-34v. Blank. ff. 35r-43r. Sermon in Latin on II Corinthians 11:26, 'perils in the city'. Introduced by prayers, including prayers for George III and Queen Charlotte, and the Prince and Princess of Wales [between 1795 and 1820]. A draft, with numerous corrections. The sermon is one of the annual Sion College Latin sermons. At f. 86v is note, in the hand of John Brand: 'St. Alphage London Wall before the Governors and Fellows of Sion College Tuesday May 3rd 1803'. The Court minutes of Sion College record that John Brand, President of the College, preached the Latin sermon on this day (London Metropolitan Archives, Sion College, Court minutes vol D, pp. 1-2). ff. 87r-129v. Included are College accounts (ff. 87-88); a printed account of a resolution of 30 May 1799 for a general subscription for the support of Joye's School (f. 89); a letter from Robert Watts, Librarian of Sion College, enclosing a copy of the Latin prayer generally used at Sion College, 26 April 1803 (ff. 94-98); correspondence of Brand with Thomas Pelham (afterwards 2nd Earl of Chichester), Home Secretary, and others concerning the gift to Sion College of sets of the journals of the House of Lords and House of Commons, 1802-03 (ff. 101-129 passim; cf.
