The East Sussex Ploughing Match Society was inaugurated in January 1966, following the decision of the Battle Branch of the National Farmers' Union to stop holding a ploughing match, having held one for over twenty years. The match is thought to have originated during the Second World War in order to raise money for Red Cross parcels for prisoners of war. The archive includes records concerning ploughing matches when they were run by the Battle NFU
The society covers the area of the county to the east of the Laughton Ploughing Match and Crowborough Ploughing Match areas. The event is held on local farms
