Donated by Nares family [Captain George Nares led the expedition]
The Challenger expedition left Britain on the 7 December 1872, on the corvette HMS Challenger, and returned on 24 May 1876, travelling 68,890 nautical miles around the globe. The aim was a scientific one, taking soundings, dredging, trawling, and temperature observations, along with species discovery.
