Including: Cousin Andrew's letter (comments), 23 Jan. 1829; Lushington's recall imminent (reasons), do.; I long to return home now, 24 Oct. 1829 (dated from the "Nilgherries"); though I am now senior enough to promotion to a post worth £3000-£4000 a year, do.; E.I. Co. inducements, do.; my 12 years' residence by this year's end qualifies me for an annuity [pension] of £600 p.a. - could then return, though at present am worth only £2000-£2500, do.; promotion will mean moving, though, do.; Lushington a nuisance, venal, but unrecalled do.; am staying with friend Thomas here - the Nilgherries are the local health-resort for Europeans, do.; WH back in Madras, do.; steam boats to ply between here and England?, do.; I am now back in Malabar, having succeeded [Mr Babington] as Principal Collector, 9 Jan. 1831; all but one of "society" here are unknown to me!, do.; be careful with your health and travelling, my dear Mother, at your age, do.; WH's new post is at a reduced salary - Resident at the Court of the Rajah of Tanjoor - his health now poor, do.; thoughts on HJ's lease, soon to expire, do.; "the golden days of making fortunes" here are long since ended - comments on newcomers' prospects today, do.; comments on Europe's changes - the priest-ridden Bourbons" taught a lesson, do.; Tom Stanley's letter - he in distress "somewhere in Devonshire", do. (this letter sent on from Temple Gpwerby to Lady le Fleming at Rydal, and endorsed "Received at Rydall Hall, June 21st 1831"; stamped "India Letter Brighton".
