Journal while on Franklin search expedition and other papers.

Bound journal, ms ink, kept by Matthews aboard H.M.S. Plover, Sept 13th 1850-April 1855.

Administrative / biographical background

According to the typescript 'On retirement from the Navy, John Matthews lived at 'Vernons' a farm at Chappel near Colchester. He died on the 12th December, 1889 at the age of 80 and was buried in the quaker burial ground at the neighbouring village of Earls Colne.'
