Nottinghamshire Archives: Portland of Welbeck (7th Deposit): Welbeck estate records

The records comprise leases, tenancy agreements, miscellaneous agreements, and related correspondence of the Welbeck estates, administered by the agents of the 6th Duke until 1926 and then by the Welbeck Estate Co. Ltd. They relate mainly to farms and cottages in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire between 1880 and 1973. The parishes covered include:

Nottinghamshire: Carburton, Clipstone, Cuckney, Edwinstowe, Holbeck, Holbeck Woodhouse, Hucknall Torkard, Kirkby in Ashfield, Langwith, Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse, Mattersey, Nether Langwith, Norton, Sutton cum Lound, Sutton in Ashfield, Warsop, Welbeck, and Worksop.

Derbyshire: Belph, Bolsover, Clowne, Cresswell, Elmton, and Whitwell.

Arrangement: Although the documents commence in 1880 they appear to have been arranged into their current series after c.1908. The items are listed in the numerical order allocated by the Estate Office, which is not strictly chronological. They have been re-numbered by Nottinghamshire Archives but with the original estate reference number appearing in brackets after the item description.

The Welbeck estates of the 6th Duke of Portland were consolidated into the ownership of the Welbeck Estate Company, Ltd. in 1926. These particular records were held in the Estate Office at Welbeck until their deposit in Nottinghamshire Archives in 1998 (Accession 5539)
