Examples from the "Smith's Suitall" Postcard Series.

The Smith's Suitall stationary and publishing firm was founded in the Buttermarket, Ipswich by Sarah Smith in 1891. The postcards were started as a series by Percy Smith, son of Sarah Smith, in partnership with a German postcard manufacturer. The postcards were printed in Germany and there were about c. 1,000 different local Suffolk scenes and subjects. Many of the postcards feature views taken from old prints and engravings made before photography was invented. There was an original print run of 1 million cards. Some specified examples are hand printed or tinted to produce a 'coloured' card effect.
