A series of 15 ms letters home (82pp in total), February 1900 - August 1903, together with an ms diary for 1901, written during his service with the 28th Company of Compton's Horse and from November 1900 the Scots Greys in South Africa during the Boer War, describing his voyage from the United Kingdom to South Africa in SS KENT, living conditions and his various duties, skirmishes with the Boers, and his hopes for an end to the war. Also held with the collection are documents relating to his service on the Western Front during the First World War, including an ms pocket diary containing brief entries made while serving as a Captain in the 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers, August - October 1914; 3 ms letters (16pp) written to his wife in May 1918 as Officer Commanding the 127th Infantry Brigade (42nd Division), commenting favourably on American troops and offering his opinion on Winston Churchill and the Tank Corps and RAF; a ts war diary (26pp) covering the 127th Brigade's fighting retreat from Bihucourt to Essarts in the face of the German advance, March - April 1918, and their capture of Miraumont and Villers au Flos, August - September 1918; plus a few miscellaneous documents and photographs dating mainly from the First World War period.
