The functions of visitor services and publicity were originally performed by the central administration of the Gallery. In 1952 the role of providing information was taken on by the Publications Department. Over time a separate Information Department evolved and by 1980 a separate Press Office was established. Information services are now covered by the Communications Department and site specific Visitor Services departments. The main functions of these departments are to deal with requests for information, press releases, promotional material and marketing.
