Town Clerk's files; (numbered series)

This section of the Town Clerk's records, known as the "B" files, comprises correspondence, committee papers, legal papers and correspondence files and relates to the "A" series of Town Clerks files (listed as GBR L6/8). The "B" files date from circa 1926 and illuminate not only the administrative history of the city but also a wide range of economic and social topics. They run in numerical sequence to which there is an alphabetical card index.

The catalogue of the "B" files falls into two parts. Firstly, the files listed under the heading "general". These were deposited at the Record Office in 1985 when Gloucester guildhall was vacated, and were then appraised and weeded by Record Office staff. A list of the files which were retained was compiled in 2004 from the contemporary card index used by the Town Clerk's department.

Some files had been extracted from the "B" series in 1974 when Gloucestershire County Council was established and were transferred, together with their index cards, to the new authority. These files were later deposited, via the County Council, at the Record Office and have been listed under various departmental headings (education, fire brigade, libraries and museums, social services). They form the second part of this catalogue. The list to the social services files, which include case papers referring to adoption and care orders, can only be viewed by application to the County Archivist.
