Description

To the Right Worshipfull Thomas Wolley, and John Hawkeshed, gent, bailiffs of Shrewsbury and to the aldermen their brethren of the Common Council and Commons of Salop.

Thomas Reynolds, the keeper of the Conduits makes his petition. He is tied by the covenant for the term of his life. Now the cundit which did lie in the River Severn had been formerly misused and so broken and patched that he several times repaired them "to his infinitee Charge and yet by reason of the defecte therein the town was well served with water for that a breach in the River would not be amended a in the space of six weakes at one time and as much at another time", and the petioner's labour was all in vain, and he had to take them out of the river, and placed good pipes in their stead. He cast new pipes for the descending hill in Humfrey Leastons pasture. Materials and wages for labour amounted to vil xiiis iiiid "And for that there was noe falte in your sayd peticioner but that he did bestowe his diligent labour and paynes fore the performance herein And furthermore that your sayd peticioners being a poore man if he be not releeved by your wrpps the disbursing of this money and the losse of his time spent herein will very neere overthrowe his whole Estate".

He begs for a reasonable sum towards such extraordinary and unexpected charges.

On dorse; continuation of petition and signature. Docketed in later hand "Petition from keeper of the Conduits for £6. 13. 4. for new pipes down the Hill and thro' the River".
