Business and estate records of the Clarke family of Noblethorpe (Silkstone parish), coalmasters. (Donations 1958, 1965, 1966 of colliery records - from Noblethorpe. Deposit 1970 of deeds and legal papers - from Messrs. Gray, York Solicitors).
Records including:
Parish: Silkstone terrier 1809; plans and papers in connection with repewing the church 1797-1825, faculty, report and plans (by Anthony Salvin) for repair of church and correspondence 1857.
Cawthorne terrier 1853.
Silkstone school: draft trust deed 1754; papers re master's salary 1802-1816.
Deeds: Silkstone (including the manor, Bullah Hall, Noblethorpe, Wolley Hall, Pyegreave and other farms), Higham (in Darton), Dodworth, Hoyland Swaine, Abbot Birks in Thurlstone.
(Families of Couldwell, Hawkesworth, Burdett, Wordsworth and others) 15th-19th centuries. (Over 500, mainly Silkstone). Colliery deeds and leases 1843-1942.
Legal cases: re Silkstone tithes and supply of wood for Silkstone smithies, early 17th century; Old Silkstone Coal & Iron Co. v. Clarke 1893-1894 (few).
Plans: Noblethorpe 1786, 1792 (including coal pits), Pye Greave farm 1812; Silkstone township 1842, and colliery 1848; architect's plans for Noblethorpe alterations 1856; Silkstone church plans (listed under Parish).
Colliery: Some accounts for Noblethorpe colliery 1796-1816; about 100 volumes of daybooks, ledgers, sales, wages, etc. for the "Basin" and other Silkstone collieries worked by the Clarkes 1825-c.1900; lime works accounts 1829-1861; sinking of New Sovereign colliery 1861-1866. Letters, orders, invoices, lock dues, 1830-1860, cumulatively giving details of the coal trade as carried on by canal via Goole and the coming of rail transport 1820-1848; workmen's ledgers of goods bought at "Tommy" shop and shop invoices 1830-1847; a few papers about strike in 1844; Goole agent's letters 1832-1840; letter books 1875-1903 (29). Railways: Letters re proposed Worsbrough, Thurgoland and Womersley railroad 1820-1821 (includes list of shareholders of Dearne and Dove Canal Co.); Clarke's accounts for railway dues to proprietors of Barnsley Canal 1812-1820. Letters about proposed Barnsley branch of M. S. & L. Railway, 1845-1847.
Correspondence: of Jonas Clarke concerning purchase of Noblethorpe 1814-1816; various papers of the Clarke's 19th century; tenancy papers and sales 20th century.
