The Materials Society of Cumbria (MSC) was founded in 1960. It was initially known as the West Cumberland Metallurgical Society (WCMS), and later the Cumbria Metallurgical Society. The Society was formed to provide a forum where metallurgists and others with an interest in metals and materials could meet to discuss technological advances and current issues, with meetings usually held on the west coast between Workington and Barrow.
The Society has always fostered relations with other groups and institutions, and in 1967 was formally affiliated to the Metals Society and the Institution of Metallurgists. The Materials Society of Cumbria continues to function.
