Frederick William Summerford began work in Salford as a blacksmith about 1910. A few years later his role in the village had changed, and he was listed in Kelly's Directory as a builder and draper, overseer, assessor and collector of taxes. In 1928 he was also listed as sub-postmaster. From 1949 the firm F W Summerford & Sons was based in Woburn Sands. Some of the work in Salford was based at Mill Farm, owned by William and Frank Summerford, farmers and millers.
