Letter-book of Matthew Prior, containing copies of his letters from Paris, 12 Oct., 1714 - 21 Mar., 1715, and from London, 27 Apr., 1715-31 Aug., 1721.

The letters in the earlier series are chiefly addressed to:- James Stanhope, Secretary of State; Charles Townshend, Viscount Townshend, Sec. of State; Earl of Halifax; Duke of Shrewsbury; Earl of Dorset. The later series, which are of a more private and literary character, are addressed, among others, to:- John Dalrymple, Earl of Stair, Envoy at Paris; Duke of Noailles; John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham (on his tragedy of "Brutus", etc.); Sir Thomas Stanmer; Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield; Charlotte Sophia, Baroness Kielmansegge; Edward, Lord Harley; Francis Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester; Allen, Lord Bathurst; Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford (that of 31 Aug., 1721 "the last letter my dear Master ever wrote", see above, PR/VOL.I.f.112); Dr. Jonathan Swift; Simon, Lord Harcourt; Charles Spencer, Earl of Sunderland.

At the end are copies of letters to Prior in 1718 from Atterbury, (p.340), Earl Poulet, (pp.342, 343), Lord Bathurst, (p.344), and the Duke of Buckingham (p.346).
