Title
Armstrong Siddeley Motors: Some notes on design of future power units
Date
24 November 1952
Description

Mr Saxton stated that his company were very anxious to obtain from the aircraft constructors a statement as to the engine which they should undertake to follow on after the Sa.7. He stated that in discussion with Sir William Farren at the beginning of August, it was learnt that Messers AVRO considered an engine with a thrust rating of 15,000 lbs to be the ultimate figure required for the development of the Vulcan aircraft. In discussion with Mr Walker, he also had indicated that an engine of 15,000 lbs thrust would be the maximum required for the Javelin development. Mr Camm was at the present time studying the possibilities of producing an attractive fighter design embodying two engines of 6,000/7,000 lbs thrust, and Armstrong Siddeley Motors have given figures to permit this study to be made. Sir William Farren stated that the only thing that mattered was the engine's performance at the operational weight and speed of the aircraft. He considered that any deficiency of take-off power could be made up. He was of the opinion that 4 engines was still the ideal number and their latest studies indicated that engines of 18,0000 lbs. static thrust would be required. This thrust had been determined from the required altitude performance of an engine of the Olympus type
