Administrative / biographical background

In 1865 an iron church was erected which stood for a few months before collapsing during a gale. The brick building which suceeded it on Upper Maze Hill was destroyed by fire in 1878. In 1881 the district of Upper St Leonard's was constituted a parish and the church, designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield, was erected in the same year. Enemy action destroyed the majority of the building in February 1943, forcing the parish to use the gynmasium of the Girls' School, Cumberland Gardens, and the chapel of the Brethren of the Resurrection. The church itself was gradually rebuilt over the next two decades to the design of H S Goodhart-Rendel whilst services were held in the new parish hall PAR472/4/4; 7/2/2; 7/6/4).
