The Collegiate Church Charity Schools were set up in 1762 after several meetings of the Clergy and Church Wardens of the Collegiate and Parish Church of Manchester. The Schools were to be supported by money from the Offertory and governed by the Warden and Fellows or the Churchwardens, who could appoint and suspend a master, mistress, and the scholars. Only children of Parishioners could attend. All the Scholars (60 boys and 60 girls) were supplied with a 'complete suit of wearing apparel' and to 'encourage the ... industry and frugality of their parents', each child was to pay 1d per week towards the cost of the clothes. The children were expected to attend for at least a year, or else forfeit their clothes, and the parents were expected to provide apprenticeship places for their children when they reached the age of 10. A Bequest of £300 was left by Mrs Bent in 1774 to be invested to provide income for the appointment of a master or mistress at the Schools.
