Administrative / biographical background

In 1836 the Home Missionary Society sent the Revd George Sandford to the area to preach in several villages including Glanvilles Wootton. It was decided that a place of worship was needed for the scattered community and in November 1837 a house at Castle Hill, Duntish was obtained. This was to serve the four villages of Glanvilles Wootton, Mappowder, Buckland Newton and Middlemarsh. It was deemed a success and a chapel was erected in 1838 and formally opened in 1839. In 1865 the chapel was in bad disrepair and sold to the Lord of the Manor, a new chapel being built soon after.
