The hospital originated as the infirmary of Gloucester Union workhouse. The first infirmary wing, built in the early 1850s, was on the south side of Great Western Road, and building began on the present site on the north side in 1912. Part of the building was occupied by the Red Cross after its completion in 1914 for use as a war hospital, and construction was completed in 1915. The hospital became part of the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital group in 1948 [for which see HO 19].
