Description

Side Lever Boat Engines for Land (14 items).

1045b. Samuel Greg & Co., Bollington (NP). Aug.-Oct. 1835, Feb. 1836, May, Dec. 1856. 14 items.
60 horse power side lever boat engine for land, with 42 inch cylinder, 4 foot stroke.

"On the introduction of a 2nd 60 horse engine" - partially coloured plan of the engine house etc. by Wren & Bennett.
Reverse side view of the engine "with sunk air pump and condenser", outline plan of the engine Sep. 1835; reverse elevation and plan of the engine, plan of the tunnel Oct. 1835; plan and sections of boilers and apparatus - partially coloured original and reverse drawings; press copy sketch of "sunk" air pump and condenser; tracing of template for outer end of crank shaft; letter from Hollins Hunt to Gilbert Hamilton dated Soho Foundry, 16 Feb. 1836, with sketch plan of cistern and air pump etc.; press copy sketch plan of the engine platform [?]. The reverse and boiler apparatus drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following later items: sketch of valves and backplates of both engines by A. Harper, May 1856; drawings of new nozzles for both 60 horse engines (2 copies - the second copy is in 2 parts); new nozzles - partially coloured reverse drawing, Dec. 1856.

For Samuel Greg & Co. Lowerhouse Mill, Bollington, Cheshire. This was the second 60 horse boat engine bought for Bollington [see Portfolio 5/1045a for the first]. The Bollington mill was later run by William Greg.
