W.A. Woodcock attended the Boys' Model School, Norwich, in the 1890s. In 1948 he resigned as managing director of the Swan Lane Shoe Company (at 3, Swan Lane) to become managing director of a new company, Bridewell Shoes, which opened a shoe shop at 6 Bridewell Alley on 23 September 1949, and was liquidated on 31 December 1959. From at least 1951 to 1960, Mr. Woodcock's home address was 83 Thorpe Road, Norwich: these papers were found a few years later in an empty house, 127 Thorpe Road.
