Ts (11pp) and ms (12pp) transcript of a report by British Officers on conditions in prisoner of war camps in Thailand up to December 1943, written for the Japanese and giving suggestions for improvements; ts copy (1p) of Percival's message to his unit commanders explaining why Singapore surrendered; ts orders, signals and report relating to the 'Selerang Incident' in September 1942 (5pp); ts account (2pp) of the last voyage of the Gunboat HMS Dragonfly, sunk off Sumatra, 14 February 1942; ts lists (11pp) of ships and their fate after fleeing from Singapore before the surrender.

Administrative / biographical background

Simpson-Oliver, a rubber planter in Malaya before the Second World War, was captured at the fall of Singapore where he was serving in the Intelligence Corps. Little is known about his experiences as a prisoner of war, except that he was initially imprisoned in Changi and subsequently in camps in Thailand. He survived the war and died in 1950.
