Administrative / biographical background

Preston's first House of Correction was opened in 1618 at the former Greyfriar's Convent between Lower Pitt Street and Ladywell Street. In 1790 the operation moved to a custonm built prison at the present site, designed by William Blackburn. By the late 19th Century it was operated as a Crown prisonserving a large part of the County, Although the prison closed in 1931, it was reopened during the Second World War as a military prison, and in 1948 returned to use as a civilian prison.
