Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's personal diaries and family journal letters

This section contains personal diaries, holiday and travel diaries and family journal letters written by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury between the 1880s and her death in December 1951.

Taylor Cadbury's early holiday and travel journals record her experiences away from home as a young woman whereas similar journals kept by Taylor Cadbury and her husband George Cadbury during the 1890s provide accounts of early family holidays. The section also features personal diaries containing dated entries providing brief accounts of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's daily activities alongside Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's family journal letters. This series of letters were written or compiled by Taylor Cadbury between 1904 and 1950 and distributed amongst her family to record and circulate family news. In addition, a diary kept by Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's son Egbert Cadbury during the First World War survives amongst Taylor Cadbury's family journal letters. Many of the diaries and journals featured in this section contain loose photographs, letters and sketches enclosed between pages.

The diary and journal letters contained within this section form autobiographical accounts of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's personal experiences and her involvement in public philanthropic work throughout her life. Annotations and markers in these documents suggest that Taylor Cadbury continually revisited her diaries and journals. Markers left amongst these documents by Taylor Cadbury's biographer Richenda Scott reveal that Scott also examined Taylor Cadbury's diaries and journals whilst she was researching her book. The presence of Taylor Cadbury and Scott amongst these documents reflects the value of Taylor Cadbury's diaries and journal letters which provide a detailed insight into the lives of Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury and her large family during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
