Administrative / biographical background

The Fabric Advisory Committee currently advises the Chapter on matters concerning the Fabric of the Cathedral. It was set up in 1980 under the rules of the Cathedral Fabric Commission for England. It succeeded the Cathedral Fabric Committee. The Fabric Committee was inaugurated on 7 Sep 1965 to deal with all matters concerning the fabric of the Cathedral building and its contents, including restoration and repair of the building itself and the organ, as well as care of vestments, silver, archives etc. and new commissions of artwork or architecture. On the Comittee were Canon Preston (Chairman), Canon Price, Dr Wood Jones (Cathedral Architect), Mr F Hawcroft, Mr F Dean and Miss M Longworth (Secretary). This arrangement continues to the present day, with representatives of the Chapter and the Cathedral architect meeting every quarter. Prior to the formation of the Committee, the Fabric of the Cathedral was the concern of the Cathedral Architect, who reported directly to the Chapter and attended Chapter Meetings. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the fabric of the parts of the Cathedral church which belonged to the parish, ie the nave and tower, were the concern of the Churchwardens.
