The Lodge of Humility and Fortitude No. 229 was established and named in 1798. In 1798 the lodge met at the Royal Artillery, Fort William, Calcutta, Bengal, India. In 1820 the lodge also became known as the 4th Lodge of Bengal. The lodge remained at Fort William until 1862 when they started to meet at Freemasons' Hall, 55 Bentinck Street, Calcutta. With the partition of India in 1947 the Grand Lodge of India was formed and as a result in 1961 each lodge had to vote on whether to join the Grand Lodge of India or remain with the United Grand Lodge of England. The lodge voted to stay with the United Grand Lodge of England but due to the partition may Europeans were now returning home so because of low membership it was decided to move the lodge to England. The last meeting in Calcutta was held in June 1963 and the first in London took place three weeks later at the Bridge Hotel, London. The lodge now meets at the Mark Masons' Hall, 86 St James's Street, London. This lodge was established originally in 1773 as a 'Moderns' Lodge under warrant No. 453. In 1773 the lodge was known as the 11th Lodge of Bengal and in 1793 it became the 5th Lodge of Bengal. It was also known from 1792 as the Lodge Humility with Fortitude. In 1798 when the lodge decided to take an Antients' warrant, the 'Modern' warrant should have been erased but by mistake it remained on the register until 1817.
