Administrative / biographical background

According to the IPM of his father Michael (SRS 14.65), John Baker was born about 1590. He married Katherine, daughter of Robert Offley of London as his first wife; she was buried in 1630. His second wife was Elizabeth daughter of John Rivers bt of Chafford in Kent, who married Matthew Honywood of Charing, Kent at South Malling in 1634 (PAR 419 1/1/1). A probable relation of Matthew's, Edward Honeywood citizen and ironmonger of London, was in partnership with John Baker of Speldhurst, John Baker's cousin, at Benhall in Frant in 1634 (DYK 72, 224). Matthew Honywood was buried at Bishopstone in 1638 and his will was proved in PCC (131 Lee) on 26 Oct 1638. For a fine map of the Mayfield Place estate, with the arms of Baker impaling Rivers, undated but 1665, see AMS 5831. John Baker purchased the manor of Mayfield with Mayfield Place and the rectory from Thomas May in 1617 and the advowson of the vicarage in 1638; he served as sheriff of Sussex in 1643-44
