Hereford. Sheriff ordered by writ dated 12 February 11 Charles (1635) non omittas to distrain John Popham, tenant in chief of the manor of Ludford (as appeared by the memoranda of this exchequer 10 James I (1612) Michaelmas term roll 43.
Sebastian Harvey lately had it to him and his heirs by bargain and sale from William Fox of 11 May 16 James, enrolled in Chancery), to do homage
The Sheriff, William Scudamore esq, returned the writ, having distrained John Popham
Easter term, John Popham gentleman and Mary his wife by Richard Barlee their attorney, complained of unjust distraint. They say that long before the writ was sent out, Edward Fox esq was seized of this manor. In the three weeks of Trinity 6 James I (1608) a fine was levied, Bonham Norton esq and John Norton gentleman, plts, Edward Fox esq deforc. on the manor of Ludford, 12 messuages, 10 cottages, 1 watermill, 4 fulling mills, 1 dovecote, 20 gardens, 10 orchards, 300 acres land, 100 acres meadow, 400 acres pasture, 60 acres wood, 20 acres furze and heath in Ludford, and free fishing in the Teame, view of frankpledge in Ludford.
Edward Fox warranted against Edward Fox esq deceased and William Fox deceased, father of Edward.
The fine was levied to use of Bonham Norton and John Norton, their heirs and assigns for ever, as appears by indenture of 10 June 6 James (1608)

Bonham and John Norton were seized of the manor, not having previously obtained a licence. They conveyed, inter alia, the manor of Ludford to Edward Fox of Steenton esq and William Fox of Ludford his son and heir without licence, but were afterwards pardoned (Exchequer memoranda 10 James, Michaelmas term roll 43)
Edward and William Fox were now seized and Edward died so seized, William surviving.

Bargain and sale of the manor of Ludford, the capital messuage called St Giles House in Ludford, common called Witcliffe, a leasow near Ledwich gate and near Haltons furlonge, and all that William Fox or Edward his father had had, to the sole use of Sir Sebastian Harvey.
Harvey and his wife were thus seized, Mary for the term of her life, without licence first had.
1 February 18 James (1621) Sir Sebastian Harvey died, Dame Mary surviving him.
The property has descended to John Popham and Mary his wife in her right as daughter and heir of Sebastian Harvey, and livery was made to them (as appears, exchequer memoranda 3 Charles I, Hilary term) - they were thus seized.
As to the alienations without licence, they say that by an act of Parliament 19 February 21 James (1624) and continued till 29 May following, all such offences received a general pardon. Since the act, they have done nothing to warrant distraint always saving the homage and fealty due to the king Docketed on dorse. Numbered 75
