The Mainland files contain correspondence concerning Eastern Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. Included within the correspondence are details concerning:copies of papers from the Bushire files relating to Bahrain affairs between 1862 and 1895; the treatment and status of Hindu merchants in Eastern Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain; Turkish activities in and withdrawal from Eastern Arabia, Qatar and outlying islands, including Ḥawār and al-Zakhnūniya; British relations with the Āl Thānī family of Qatar; British relations with 'Abd al-'Azīz bin 'Abd al-Raḥmān bin Fayṣal Āl Sa'ūd (Ibn Sa'ūd) in the context of the First World War and his relations with Turkey, the Āl Rashīd family of Jabal Shammar, Sharīf Ḥusayn of Mecca, and the Āl Ṣabāḥ family of Kuwait; the Ikhwān movement; British relations with Kuwait

These files are arranged by file and part number. For example, E/4 where E is the Confidential file reference (Mainland) and 4 is the file number. The E/8 files relating to Ibn Sa'ūd are arranged with part numbers. For example, E/8 VII. The references of the surviving files indicate likely gaps in the series.
