Administrative / biographical background

Thomas Henry Hall Caine (1853-1931) was born in Runcorn, the son of John Caine of the Isle of Man, a ship's smith, who had emigrated to England. Thomas attended school in Liverpool, but the Isle of Man. His early training as an architect was discontinued because of ill-health but he subsequently became a builder's assistant and published essays in architectural criticism. His membership of the Notes and Queries Society put him in touch with many famous people, including Dante Gabriel Rosetti, whose friend and companion he became. After his marriage in 1881, Caine became a leader writer for the Liverpool Mercury, but later abandoned journalism for the novel, publishing his first in 1885. His novels, many of them set in the Isle of Man, of which he had a profound knowledge, achieved wide popularity. [SEE: Dictionary of National Biography, 1931 - 1940.]
