Description (What the record is about)

The site of the property formed part of John Tourle's Spital Farm to which was added the estate sold by George [West] Lord De La Warr and his trustees to William Stanford on 27 and 28 Aug 1824; both were purchased by William Edwin Baxter from Edward Stanford on 1 Apr 1856. The estate was affected by an exchange ordered by the enclosure commissioners between William [Nevill] Lord Abergavenny and Baxter on 23 Sept 1858 [for which see ABE 11W]
Baxter, of Bedford Park, Croydon, died 7 Jan 1873 and his will of 15 Jan 1868 was proved by his widow Ann Baxter on 27 Jan 1873, and on 15 May 1888 the trustees (named) of the Court, Lewes Castle 2562 of the Ancient Order of Foresters Friendly Society (to whom a 1871 Mortgage to the Monarch Building Society had been assigned on 3 Mar 1876) re-conveyed to Ann Baxter, who died 26 Apr 1897
On 13 Apr 1899 Wynne Edwin Baxter and the other persons interested in William Edwin Baxter's estate conveyed the estate (detailed plan) to Hubert John Powell, Reginald Henry Powell, Walter Lintott and William Gates, all of Lewes gents, for £700. Leicester Road was already measured out and detailed building covenants are included in the conveyance
On 9 Apr 1903 the purchasers sold the sites of 40-62 Leiester Road (plan) to James William Best of 21 South Street, builder for £420, half of which Best borrowed from Frederick Heaver Hoey of Burgess Hill gent; the remainder was advanced by the vendors on a weekly basis (2)
On 6 Jul 1904 both mortgagees by virtue of a power of sale conveyed the sites of 56 and 58 Leicester Road (plan) to Henry Milham of Lewes builder for £60; an endorsement records the sale of a house at 56 Leicester Road to George Briggs of Leicester Road gardener on 12 Dec 1905 (1)
On 21 May 1906 Milham, of Morris Road, conveyed a house at 58 Leicester Road occupied by Henry Batchelor to Albert Ernest Page of Malling Street butcher for £250, of which £150 was borrowed from Fanny Bethia Caffin of 14 Whyke Road, Chichester spinster (3, 4). On 12 May 1908 Page sold the property, occupied by Duke, to Rhoda Ruff of White Hill, Lewes spinster for £253, from which the mortgage was discharged; Miss Ruff mortgaged to the Lewes Co-Operative Benefit Building Society (5, 6)
Miss Ruff of Flat 3, 35 Montpelier Crescent, Brighton sold the houses to Minnie Poole of Heath House, Lewes spinster for £250 on 27 Apr 1920; Miss Poole sold to the Lewes Portland Cement and Lime Company Limited for £380 on 8 Jul 1922 (7, 8). On 15 May 1964 Eastwoods Cement Limited sold to Vera Gladys Pullen of 33 Firle Crescent for £1,500; the purchaser, as Vera Gladys Small, sold to Christopher Henry Charles and Margaret Helen Whittick of Flat 6, 34 King Henry's Road for £12,450 on 1 Feb 1978 (9, 10)
