PAPERS OF THE TRIPP FAMILY OF SHIPHAM ETC

John, son of John and and Florence Tripp of Shipham (1653-1745) married in 1676. Of his eight children the eldest, Rev.John (c. 1681-1739) married Abett Keball at Huntspill where he was incumbent in 1718. Their eldest son John (1720-1766) married Ann, daughter of Rev.James Upton of Bishops Hull in 1742 and the collection contains a bundle of Upton family letters mainly between James and one of his sons, John (DD\TP 10). John and Ann's eldest son John (c. 1745-1814) was rector at Sutton near Petworth 1771-1783 and he married at Petworth in 1781 a Sarah Burchill. The family later claimed Sarah to have been a daughter of the 2nd Earl of Egremont but this seems improbable and it is more likely that she was the daughter of David Burchill of Wisborough Green, bapt.1757. John and Sarah moved to Spofforth in Yorkshire where he died in 1814. His widow survived him for twenty years. John and Ann's second son James Upton (1749-1801) was Lord Egremont's agent at Petworth and the youngest son Henry became a barrister of the Middle Temple and later resided at Orchard Wyndham. He acted as executor and trustee for his brother John and it was not until his death in 1835 that the family's lands in Huntspill were sold (DD\TP 9).

John and Sarah's eldest son Charles was incumbent of at least two Devonshire parishes, Kentisbeare and Bondleigh, before becoming Rector of Sampford Brett in 1831, the patronages of all three belonging to the Wyndham family. He married Francis, daughter of Col.William Owen whose brother William, a barrister, became Sir William Owen,Bt. in 1817 and, in 1838, on inheriting estates in South Wales, took the surname Barlow. On the death of Sir.William, the Welsh estates passed to another branch of the Owen family although Rev.Henry Tripp, the eldest son of Charles, seems to have contemplated making a claim both to them and to the Baronetcy. Henry's eldest son, Owen Howerd, later assumed the surname Owen.

At some point in the C19th the family acquired a moiety of the advowson of Sampford Brett and in the early C20th there was much discussion on the choice of incumbent and c. 1931 some talk of selling it although this did not, in fact occur (See D\P\Sa.b. 1/1/1).
