Description (What the record is about)
-
William Verrall of Southover (1798-1890) was the son of William Verrall, brewer, who died in 1837; the information contained in this volume lists the deeds of property purchased by both father and son, and was probably prepared in connection with the winding up of the estate of the elder William Verrall, whose will was proved on 30 Mar 1837
The first schedule, presented in a book of 161 pages with an index of places at the front, was augmented on at least two further occasions to show subsequent purchases by William Verrall
Pages 1 to 82 list the deeds of properties and mortgages acquired by William the elder up to 1838, with schedules to show the date of purchase, the price, the present [1838] value, the occupier's name, the rent and when it is due and observations; of these, only the first two and occasionally the fourth are completed
Pages 83 to 108 list property acquired up to 1859, and seem to have been written at the date of purchase; the entries are also accompanied by schedules
Pages 109 to 123 list acquisitions up to 1870, and seem to have been compiled from the rough notes listed as AMS6306/2; they do not have schedules
Pages 124 to 161 are blank
Many of the lists begin with notes of abstracts of title and bundles of old deeds, the contents of which are not listed. None of the deeds listed can be traced among those deposited with the Sussex Archaeological Society by Stuckey, Carr & Co of Brighton, solicitors, in 1970, and yet the list of sales off to be endorsed on the will of Frank Verrall (AMS6306/3), for whose estate that firm acted, suggests that the firm held at least some of the deeds as late as 1951
