Administrative / biographical background

A church was built at Loxwood c.1404 as a chapel of ease to Wisborough Green parish church. Loxwood was formed into a separate ecclesiastical district in August 1873. In 1978 it was united with Alfold benefice in Surrey and therefore transferred from the diocese of Chichester to the diocese of Guildford.

The civil parish of Loxwood was formed in 1938 and remains in the county of West Sussex.

Until 1873 all records of baptisms, marriages and burials were entered in the Wisborough Green registers. Thereafter Loxwood created its own series of ecclesiastical records. A series of deeds and legal papers relating to the church endowment, 1531-1897, has also survived. The main series of ecclesiastical records has been deposited at the Surrey History Centre, Goldsworth Road, Woking
