Description

The collection consists of deeds and papers relating to the family property and professional activities of the families of Kelsall, later Prescot, of Bradshaw, and Oldfield of Leftwich, in Cheshire and other counties, 1544-1931. A pedigree of the Kelsall family is given on pp.194-5 of J. P. Earwaker's 'East Cheshire' Vol.1 (1877), and a pedigree of the Oldfield family on p.273 of Ormerod's 'The History of Cheshire' Vol.III (1882 edn.).

The documents have been sorted and listed as follows:

DOL/1-87. Cheshire : alphabetical order of township.

DOL/88-106. Other counties : alphabetical order of county.

DOL/107-148. Miscellaneous : chronological order.

Immediate source of acquisition

The collection was given in Dec. 1950 per B.R.A. No.769 by Major H. P. Oldfield cousin of Helen Monica Prescot, only daughter of Rev. Oldfield Kelsall Prescot of Bradshaw.

Custodial history

Acc. 81

Several bundles of 20th cent. correspondence and accounts relating to Cheshire and Lincolnshire estates of Monica Prescot were considered unworthy of retention and were destroyed in February 1971. A list of these has been placed in the accession file.
