Administrative / biographical background

These photographs came from an album passed on to Mrs. Sweet née Marsland from her maid-aunt's family. Her name was Mrs. Harriet Clayton née Booth. Harriet was Mrs. Sweet's maid-aunt because her husband and Mrs. Sweet's mother lived next door to each other as children. Later when they married they lived in the same street and the two families were very close. As Harriet had no children Monica Marsland was a frequent visitor to her house. Harriet came from a family of four sisters who all worked in the mill. Esther Ann was born in 1874 and worked as a beamer at Bottomley's (previously called Hopkins) Mill. Harriet was born in 1887 and worked as a carder at the Brittania Mill. Margaret was a winder at Clark and Wilsons and Hannah was a warper at Croft Mill. All the mills were in Mossley. Their father, Benjamin Booth was a foreman at a mill.
