He was bora in J£jJ.pjp Pike, Howden, East Yorkshire, in 1895 to Laura E and George H
Reported in the Yorkshire Post & Leeds Intelligencer on the 6th April 1918 a brother officer, in a letter to
Mrs Aptopp, wrote:
"Eric stayed with the front gun of all, which was quite what we expected of him. The Major had given him
the most dangerous post, because he insisted on having it. The second in command was wounded
somewhere out in front. Eric ran out to fetch him in and was shot in the head by a German sniper. It was
absolutely the most noble death anyone could wish. As a soldier we all miss him. He was the finest soldier
I have ever met, with an absolute contempt of death and devoted to his work." He was attached to 119th
CoyMGC.;
