Description (What the record is about)
-
This section represents a sample only of the warehouse invoices and lists of the principal purchasers, predominantly for the duration of WW11, the selection being made to represent the orders for tiling in public buildings such as hospitals, hotels, shops and a few big housing projects. There is also evidence of the use of tiling in the War Effort, with a huge expansion in the erection of barracks for the Armed Forces, factory canteens and shipping. The choice of colours of tiles for the home and export market was severely restricted, as is reflected in the invoices, although it is surprising to note huge purchases of broken glazed tiles by someone in Bombay.
Maw and Co. subcontracted much of Craven Dunnill's order book, mainly for firing and glazing, and undertook work for J.C.Edwards of Ruabon.
Also included are some Insurance manifests, and replacement orders for goods damaged in transit. Methods of despatch included rail, lorry, cart, post and shipping lines from Liverpool and Manchester, or personal collection for local orders. It is interesting to read the handwritten note made by the Office clerk to the warehouseman. These should be read in conjunction with the tape recordings made by former employees of Maw and Co., such as Madeleine Gregory and the Jenks family and compare them, if possible, with the order books for Craven Dunnill during the same years.
