Administrative / biographical background

George Prevost (1804-93), succeeded to the baronetcy in 1816. He matriculated at Oriel College in 1821, where he was a pupil of John Keble and entered the circle of the Oxford Movement as one of its principal members. He was a close friend of John Keble and of Samuel Wilberforce (later successively bishop of Oxford and Winchester), and married in 1828 Jane, sister of Isaac Williams. Ordained deacon that year and priest in 1829, he served as curate at Chalford to Thomas Keble, vicar of Bisley. In 1834 he became rector of Stinchcombe, where he died in 1893. He was Rural Dean of Dursley, 1852-66, and Archdeacon of Gloucester, 1865-81.

He translated Homilies of St. John Chrysostom on the Gospel of St. Matthew (1843) for J.H. Newman's Lives of the Fathers, and edited Isaac Williams's Autobiography, but he was not (contrary to the statement in Dictionary of National Biography) one of the authors of Tracts for the Times.

All his life he kept in close touch with the Oxford Movement, but like Keble was concerned with practical religion and standards of church life rather than the introduction of ritualistic practices.
