This firm was originally set up by John Vivian in about 1880 at 42, Lowther Street , Whitehaven, Cumbria, but by 1901 had moved to Parkside, Cleator Moor, Cumbria. By 1933 the firm was based at 50, Front Street, East Boldon. These premises were also occupied by the firm of James Johnson & Sons Ltd., sinking and boring contractors, who had been at this address since at least 1925. It is probable that the two firms merged at around the time Vivian's first moved into the premises in Front Street, but both firms continue to be listed separately in trades directories until at least 1938.
