Administrative / biographical background

The Manchester Women's Christian Temperance Association which was affiliated to the British Women's Temperance Association was formed in 1875 and soon grew establishing branches throughout the city and surrounding area. The Police-Court Mission was a very important element in their campaign and helped to pioneer social work among women appearing in the police courts. The Grove Retreat for Inebriate Women, licenced under the Inebriates' act of 1879-1888, was opened in July 1890 and was soon full, with many applications having to be refused every year. The basis of the Association was unsectarian and the object 'to raise common womanhood by teaching self-control and self-denial'.
