Administrative / biographical background

The Lisbon Lodge, also known as the No. 1 Portugal was established in 1798 and met at an unknown location in Lisbon, Spain. In January 1798 the lodge met under the authority of a dispensation granted by Lodge No 112A [held by the 50th Regiment of Foot], Lodge 94A [held by the 51st Regiment] and Lodge 179 [St. David's Lodge, Berwick-?on-?Tweed]. This authority gave them permission to work for up to three months until their warrant arrived. In April 1798 as the warrant still hadn't arrived another so another dispensation was granted. The lodge only survived for a few months due to the great opposition against Masonry in Portugal.
