The documents listed here formed part of the Hengrave Hall manuscripts deposited by Sir John Wood in the University Library, Cambridge, in 1952. Related documents were deposited on loan in Bury St Edmunds and West Suffolk Record Office (now Suffolk Record Office, Bury St Edmunds Branch).
In 1980 the records held at Bury St Edmunds were purchased by Suffolk County Council from the Sir John Wood Will Trust, together with the documents in this collection (HA 528), which it was decided would be more appropriately housed here than in Cambridge. A table showing the previous (Cambridge University Library) reference numbers of items in collection HA 528 will be found at the end of this introduction.
