The donor was born Gladys Mills in 1907. Her father Fielding Mills (born 1860) in Todmorden, Lancashire, worked for the Co-op. Her mother, Rachel Gregory, (born 1870) worked in a textile mill, Hallsworth Mill, on Factory Lane, Eccles, where her own father was a foreman. The donor attended St. Andrew's School, Barton Lane, Eccles, and was an active member of the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Eccles, where she later became a Sunday School teacher.
