Government of India Foreign Department letters (marked 'Secret' or 'Political'), sent to the Secretary of State for India, with Enclosures. The letters are dated 10 October - 27 December 1871. The papers relate to Zanzibar, Afghanistan, India, Persia, Turkish Arabia, Aden, Muscat, the Persian Gulf, Bahrain, and Nejd [Najd]. Important topics include: the work of the mission to achieve the settlement and demarcation of the frontier between Persia and Kalat in Baluchistan, led by Major-General Frederick John Goldsmid; the operations of Ottoman military and naval forces in Nejd and the Persian Gulf; the ramifications of the seizure and execution at Bahrain of a messenger who was carrying letters for the Ottoman Government; the accession of Saiyid Barghash as Sultan of Zanzibar; and the accession of Sayyid Turkī bin Sa'īd Āl Bū Sa'īd as Sultan of Muscat.

The Letters and Enclosures are filed in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The volume includes an index on folios 4-68. Entries in the index refer to entries in the volume, in accordance with the pagination system on folios 69-665. Many of the items consist of the Despatch (No. 1), an Abstract of Contents (No. 2), and the Enclosures to the Despatch, (Nos. 3, 4, etc.), each numbered in accordance with the number given in the Abstract of Contents. The Enclosures to each Despatch are in approximate chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.
