Description (What the record is about)
-
The leases are of property in East Street, Orchard Lane, College Street, Union Street, Chapel Street and Cook Street, with a few copies or notices of assignment of leases in Belvidere Terrace and one lease of mudland. They normally run for a period of 40 years and were granted on payment of a lump sum and a ground rent. Most are from the period 1820 to 1850.
The rectors during these years, who granted the leases, were the Rev. Newton Ogle until 1797, the Rev Francis North, later Earl of Guilford, 1797-1850, and the Rev Joseph Cotton Wigram, Archdeacon of Winchester 1851-1860. Most of the deeds carry the confirmation either of the Bishop or the Dean and Chapter or, from about 1830, of the two together included as parties to the lease.
The rentals and lists of endowments are mainly from 1878 and 1893. These include lists of properties leased for 40 years and those on longer leases, with the endowment charges attached to each. Later rentals and particulars refer to the sale of the ground rents of a large area around St Andrews Road in 1933. The collection also includes a note of All Saints rent charge 1926-27 and a map showing All Saints glebe in Breamore 1953.
