The donor's father came from Whitgift, co. York with his uncle and aunt, who, having retired from ropemaking and inn-keeping in co. York, took over Church Farm at Church Knowle, co. Dorset. After his uncle's death, the donor's father carried on Church Farm and moved to Blackmanston Farm, Steeple, co. Dorset, in 1898
