He went forward with a platoon in face of heavy machine fire to force the crossing of the river Lys near Comines on 15 October 1918. When a temporary withdrawal was ordered he remained at the crossing place organising the evacuation of the wounded. Later the material was got forward and the bridge was built he himself entering the river up to his waist and assisting in the erection of it. Throughout the four days operations, he behaved splendidly.;
