Description

The sub-series 'Collection 29: Persia and Persian Gulf; British Representation and Representatives in Persia and the Gulf' files cover a wide range of topics affecting British diplomatic and consular representation in Iran, Iraq, and in the Persian Gulf. The files may be broadly arranged under the following categories:. administrative arrangements of consular districts; diplomatic relations with Iran; recruitment, appointments and conditions of employment of staff at HM Vice-Consulates, Consulates, and Embassies in Iran, Iraq, and in the Persian Gulf; sale of land, building maintenance, budgets and expenditures; telecommunications, postal services, purchase of cars and launches; . There is also documentation relating to the transfer of the Political Residency in the Persian Gulf from Bushire to Bahrain (IOR/L/PS/12/3552-3555).

Arrangement

The files belong to the Departmental Papers: Political (External) Files and Collections 1903-1950 series and are arranged according to their collection number (29). Each individual file reference consists of the collection number '29' followed by an oblique stroke and a unique, sequential file number, for example: Coll 29/1, through to 29/119. This file number is further subdivided, if another part file on the same topic was created, for example: Coll 29/118(3). The numeral '3' represents file part '3'. Some files are further subdivided using letters, for example Coll 29/45(3) is followed by 29/45(3A), through to 29/45(3E). Gaps in the various sequences described above indicate missing or weeded files.
